5 steps to study in the United States

Charla sobre los 5 pasos para estudiar en Estados Unidos

Education Usa has visited our school, Casvi International American School, to explain to Grade 10, Grade 11 and DP1 students what are the five steps to study in the United States after high school. They are the official source of information and advice on higher education in the United States, so we take this opportunity to explain everything about this process.

1- Research different options

The first step in studying in the United States is to research the different options. Students interested in studying in USA should be informed in order to find the university that best suits them, their needs and their long-term goals.

There is no official ranking of educational institutions in the United States. Therefore, the best option is the one that best suits the student’s needs. Therefore, it is recommended to start looking for information at least 12 to 18 months before before the beginning of the academic year for which you are applying. Be sure to collect all the necessary information.

It is important to think about different aspects such as what area of the country we would like to live in, what requirements we would need, what our grades are like, whether financial support is needed…

In this U.S. college search engine, you can start researching and searching for universities. Once you have selected your favorites, you should write down the admission dates for each of them.

On the other hand, you should be aware of the difference between private or public universities (with a 4-year period) and community colleges (which offer a 2-year program of study, although after that you can also enter the university).

2- Finance your studies

Did you know that many international students at U.S. universities receive financial aid? If you wish to apply for this kind of financial support, you must take into account the requirements and dates for applying for grants, which vary from one institution to another.

Depending on where you live and study, accommodation and food costs differ considerably. For example, suburban or rural areas in the South and Midwest generally have a lower cost of living, while living in cities such as New York is much more expensive.

From Education USA (Fullbright Spain) they recommend to start this matter as soon as possible in order to clarify the different economic options. When budgeting for studying away from home, you have to take into account the total costs of living there.

3- Fill out your application

4- Apply for a student visa

5- Getting ready to leave

Submitting applications to different universities is a time-consuming task. Each university is different, so their requirements are also very different. Letters of recommendation, written essays and proof of academic results from the last four years of high school are usually required. Good grades are the best tool to get accepted to a U.S. university.

Once you have been admitted to an American university, it is time to apply for a student visa. You will receive an I-20 or DS-2019 form from the international student office, which you must present at the time of visa application.

Here you can find more information about it.

Once the visa is obtained, it may seem that everything is ready, but it is advisable to check that all the documentation is correct and start planning the trip in advance (medical insurance, residence, airline tickets…).

Education Usa offers free orientation sessions for students who wish to begin this academic adventure. We invite you to explore the different options with them!

Vocational Guidance at Casvi International American School

Our Guidance Team also assists our young students in the process of choosing a university. The guidance consultants have group and individual meetings with the students to advise them about their different educational options and help them during this important process.

We have professionals dedicated to contacting national and international universities for this task. In addition, we organize Consultant Fairs and University Fairs to bring educational institutions closer to students.
