Sports and values, the key to comprehensive development

Sport is a fundamental tool for personal and social development, especially in young people, as it allows them to learn life lessons while shaping their personality and character. Practicing sport not only promotes physical health, but also fundamental values such as respect, self-improvement, teamwork, and discipline.

Values that sport strengthen

A person involved in sports learns to collaborate with others, to appreciate joint effort, and to not only respect their teammates but also their opponents. All of this promotes solidarity and strengthens coexistence. Likewise, sports help manage emotions and maintain a positive attitude when facing challenges, as well as teach individuals to accept both victories and defeats with humility.

On the other hand, respect is a vital value in sport, as it teaches us to obey the established rules and always maintain good sportsmanship. Discipline in these activities contributes to sustain a ongoing commitment to training and to each person’s personal growth, thus fostering healthy habits that extend to other areas of life.

Impact on Personal and Academic Development

A study published by Frontiers in Psychology (2021), states that sports participation in children and young people promotes values that contribute to their overall and academic development. Sports also has a positive influence on motivation and self-esteem. Young athletes tend to have better emotional management skills and a greater sense of responsibility, which promotes balanced development. In the academic field, these skills and values manifest themselves in greater focus, discipline, and the ability to collaborate in groups, qualities that benefit school performance.
